KAIAPOI.

The Kaiapoi Branch of the Lady Liverpool Fund lias sent the following articles to the depot in Christcliureh since .Inly 1: —52 towels, 1 dozen tins condensed milk, 15 sanitary shirts, 125 pairs socks, and 4 bags; £7 47/- has been forwarded to the Waistcoat Fund, £5 to the Gramophone Fund, and also £lO (being two months' subscriptions). The branch is making 50 housewives and 50 holdalls each month, and has! supplied mufflers, balaclavas, and money! bolts to 15 soldiers. The Kaiapoi District High School has! forwarded Hi medicine cloths, 2X\ i handkerchiefs, 40 face cloths, 38 pairs socks, 1 dozen pillow cases, 6 scarves, 0 pairs mittens, and £4 2/6 in cash. The Great Northern Concert Party, until recently known as the Kaiapoi Minstrels, is giving a concert in aid of the Latty Liverpool Fund in the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi, to-night. Next Sunday the Baptist Churches of Canterbury are observing as "Town and Country Sundav," and it has been arranged for the Rev. L. B. Busfiekt, of Sydenham, to conduct the evening service in the local Baptist Church. On Saturday evening last a short public meeting was held at the band rotunda, when the Mayor laid before the people the facts of the war loan. The Mayor was supported by several members of the Borough Council and prominent business men. ■ Those present pledged themselves to do all in their power to assist to make the loan a success. Several inquiries have been made lately as to the whereabouts of the new road grader recently acquired by the Borough CounciJ, but.it is understood that its non-appearance is' due to a difficulty in procuring a suitable team of horses to work the implement. Next Sunday evening Kaiapoi is to be treated to a sacred concert in the Oddfellows' Hall, when the Russian boy violinist, Henri de Lissac, is to appear. - Some idea of how the local people view the present war loan may be gauged from the fact that last Saturday the Post Office ran through its third lot of allotted loan certificates. The charge sheet at the Kaiapoi S.M. Court this week consisted of one item only, and that one was very brief. Nathaniel L. Thompson, juu., unsuccessfully pleaded not guilty to a breach of his prohibition order by being drunk, but failed to convince the Magistrate that the fact of his walking along the street in gum boots instead of ordinary boots induced the police to bring the present charge. Thompson was fined 10/- and costs. An application for an affiliation order against W. D. Barrett-, a Maori, was partly heard, and then adjourned until December 4, defendant to find surety for £too that he would appear. •
