THANKS FROM THE FRENCH. Iri connection with the amount remitted by the Red, Cross Office in Christ--1 church to the French Consul for New [Zealand at Auckland for the French Red Cross, as a result of the appeal I mai'.e in this district in March Ja-st. the '■ following communication has been received from the French Red Cross Society at Paris, dated June 15, 1916: i French Consul for New Zealand, Auckland,- —Mr Consul: I have just received your letter dated April 29. 1910, informing me of the sending by cable of the jsum of £.'5394 sterling, being total of | subscriptions collected in the district, of North Canterbury by the English Red J Cross Society, Christehurch, for the | benefit of the French Red Cross. This I gift has been deposited in our name on | May 4by the "Credit Lyonnais," and ; the amount represents in francs the sum of 96,869 francs, as I have already had ithe honour to inform you by mv "letter jot" May 15, 1916. I can but renew today, Mr Consul, all our thanks for this ■lminifkient amount sent, and to beg of iyou to kindly communicate to the Red ; Cross of the'district of North Canterbury the deep expression of gratitude |from the French Red Cross. According to the wish that you have expressed to ime, I sent the notice to the French I Press., giving a full account of the sympathetic wave of feeling for France, I which is manifested in this occasion by jthe population of the district of North I Canterbury.
