From Our Own Correspondents At a sitting of the Ashburton Police Court to-day, W. J. Patterson was fined 10/- and costs for failing to attend drill. Judgment for the plaintiff by default, with costs, was given in each of the following eases: —A. Orr and Co. v. T. Annett, £l3 10/-; F. W. Hart v. Geo. Keeley, £5 7/-; Ellen Paterson v. C. J. Moran, £4 15/-. The Amateur Operatic Society held its first practice of "lolantbe" on Thursday. There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen, and the work put in was very creditable. Prior to.the C.D.C. Band being formed into the Bth South Canterbury Mounted, one of the vice-presidents (Mr W. Searle) obtained sufficient money to buy medals for contests. These contests were held on Wednesday night, and resulted as follow: — C. Grade. —T. Bryant (euphonium), 91 points, 1; E. Clemens (E bass), 89, 2; W. Inwood (B bass), 88, 3 B Grade.—S. Terris (B-fiat cornet), 100, 1; E. Willers (B-flat cornet), 94, 2; W. Anderson (B-flat cornet), 92, 3. A Grade. —J. C. Thomas (soprano cornet), 148, 1; A. Baskell (B-flat cornet), 147, and L. G. McDonald (euphonium), 147 (equal), 2; S. Fenton, BBflat bass), 146, 3. •Mr W. A. Humphries acted as judge. Uniformly good playing was shown throughout by the competitors, especially by the winner of the B grade (S. Terris). At the close, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the accompanists, Mrs Frizelle, Miss Hosken, and Messrs L. Owen, and L. Terris. The competitors chose their own selections. The ladies of the Church of Christ opened a sale of work on Thursday in aid of the church building fund. After the Deputy-Mayor (Mr Ferriman) had officiated, Mr Briton Jarvis, on behalf of the Sisters' Serving Guild, presented Mr Ferriman with a huge cake, to bo handed over to the Lady Liverpool Depot. Good business was done, and as the salo is to continue till Saturday a large sum should be realised. The following are in charge of the stalls: — Eefreshments, Mesdames Bands and Kilgour; fancy work, Mrs A. J. TyrrellBaxter and Miss C. Dale; plain sewing, Mrs W. Olsen and Mrs J. Eeadhead; cake stall, Miss J. Moodie; sweets, Miss 11. Williams; doll stall, Miss E. Knox and E. Harvey; produce, Mrs J. Olsen; post office (stationery, etc.), Miss Terza Williams; flower stall, Mr J. Scott; Christmas tree, Mrs Mathiesou. The Bth South Canterbury Begimental Band made its first public appearance on Thursday, when it headed the procession of the 16th Eeinforeement through the streets. Many favourable comments were passed on the smart military appearance of the band. The Gore High School first eleven journeyed to Ashburton last evening in order to play a football match with the local High School to-day. The visitors were entertained at the pictures on Thursday, and will be given a tea at the Arcadia and a social at the school this evening. A very interesting and well-contested football match was played on Thursday between the High School A team (schools' competition) and Ilampstead A. The teams were evenly matched, but Ilampstead won by 5 points to 3. Gordon Day scored and Lamb converted for Hatnpstead, while D. McDonald kicked a penalty goal for High School. A number ofTinwald citizens assembled on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Troopers Alridgo and Baker. Mr James Cow presided. During the evening songs and musical items wore contributed, and dancing was indulged in. Mr James Cow presented the troopers with a safety razor each, on behalf of the residents of Tinwald.
