FATALITY AT ASHBURTON
STRUCK BY RAILWAY ENGINE OLD MAN KILLED. Preea Association. ASIIBURTON, August 17. An old age pensioner named Johi ; Sufiield, 75 years of age, was cross 'ing the railway line near the statioi |at 8.30 o'clock this morning, whet |ho was struck by a shunting engim | and killed instantly. He was ven I deaf, and apparently did not heai ! the engine coming. Our Ashburlon corresponden sends the following additional de iails:—Sufiield was walking behint a truck, and stepped right in Iron ci the engine. The cngine-drivei 'only pulled up when he felt tin hump. The body was very badlj mangled. An inquest will be open ed this afternoon, but will be ad journed.
