OTAGO BEATS CANTERBURY. | The match by telegraph between teams representing the Canterbury and Otago 1 Chess Clubs was brought to a close on | Saturday evening. Mr R. A. Joseph olliI ciated as umpire in Christchurch for Otago, ■ and Mr D. Harris Hastings for the CanterI bury team at Dunedin. Mr H. I. Bennett was in charge of the telegraph arrange- ! inents, and the work in that department \ was carried out efficiently. At the close of | the first night's play the Otago team had scored two wins, and had an advantage at least at two other boards. On Saturday I the southerners again played well, and at | the call of time at midnight had gained I six clear wins, and had lost only one game. I Careful play was observed at the leading boards, with a result that draws wenagreed to at the first and second boards.
