THE PINCH IN GERMANY.

RIOTS IN CHARLOTTENBURG. . Although the Greater Berlin authorities iind it expedient to minimise or altogether deny the reports of serious food rioting within their borders, the following from the Berlin "Zeitung am Mittag" reveals a serious enough disturbance:— "Demonstrations last night in Charlottenburg had very unpleasant consequences for certain tradesmen, notorious for their bad treatment of customers, and for demanding excessive prices. After two streets had been closed by the police, the excited crowd slowly withdrew in the late evening hours of yesterday. In the night, however, the mob assembled again, and began to wreck the butter and fish shops in the neighbouring streets, which were not guarded by the police. "About 1 a.m. they smashed the windows of a butter shop, stormed the shop, and plundered and destroyed almost all that it contained. Then they passed to another butter shop, where they contented themselves with banging all the signboards together. A section of the crowd stormed a third butter shop, and a soldier who tried to resist the stormers was hurled by the raging mob through the window. This shop was also plundered, afterwards a cigar shop, then a wine shop. The shop of the town fish supply was attacked, and (he whole "Wilmersdorferstrasse shows extensive damage at the hands of the crowd. The windows of a shop were smashed in because an unpopular butcher had taken refuge there."
