The stock markets are weak owing to the growth of war expenditure. There is a possibility that the bank rate will be raised to 7 per cent. Consols are quoted at 58}. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram, dated July 15, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):— Meat.—There is less demand for Canterbury mutton. Home-killed mutton and English lamb are in good supply. New Zealand mutton and lamb are in small supply. Prices are unchanged, with the result that arrivals of mutton are very heavy, with prices wep.k. Argentine lamb, prices are Armor. New Zealand mutton, per lb, B|d, ewe mutton B]d, Argentine mutton !)}d, New Zealand lamb Slid, Argentine lamb 10£ d, New Zealand bull beef, hinds 6d, fores 51d, Argentine chilled beef, hinds 9id s fores 7sd. Butter.—The market is very quiet. Danish, salted, 170/- to 174/- per cwt; Canadian, salted, 160/- to 162/-; Australian, salted, 158/- to 160/-; New Zealand, salted 166/- to 168/- and up to 170/-, unsaltcd 168/- to 170/-; Irish creamery, salted, 156/- to 160/-; Argentine, salted, 154/- to 156/-, unsalted 156/to 160/-. Cheese.—The market is depressed, and closed irregular and unsettled. Canadian, white 84/- to 88/- per cwt, coloured 84/- to 88/-; English cheddnr, 102/- to 104/-. New Zealand: The market'has been unfavourably affected by heated and damaged cheese, and higher prices refer to sales made earlier during the week; white and coloured 82/to 84/- per cwt, and up to 86/- to 88/-. States, flats, white 80/- to 86/-. Hemp.—The market is quiet, little doing, but good feeling prevails. Good fair New Zealand hemp, per ton, £4B 10/-, fair £47; Government graded fair Manila £52, coarse £49; July-September shipment, good fair New Zealand £4B, fair £46; Government graded fair Manila £SO 10/-, coarse £lB. The output of hemp at Manila for the week ending last Saturday was :!2,000 bales. Wheat.—The market is quiet, but holders are firm. Canadian, arrived 52/-, afloat 51/-. 1 Oats. —The market is quiet. Argentine, arrived 30/-. Wool. —Merino: The market is strong; all stocks are advancing. Crossbred: The market is quiet with a tendency in favour of buyers.
