The city of Cheng-tu has assumed its independence without a formal j declaration. | [Cheng-tu, which h;is a population of over | 800,000, is the capital of the province of I Sze-chuen. It is one of the largest cities lof China, and a great emporium of trade i with Thibet and neighbouring regions, from j which furs, musk, rhubarb, drugs, and j other commodities are brought to the place, ! which has also a considerable trade in tex- ! tiles and tea. There is also a modern arms j manufactory. Cheng-tu has better and cleaner streets and a more refined population than most Chinese towns.]
