COUNTY COUNCILS.
PAPARUA. The ordinary meeting of the council j was attended "by Mr James Leslie (in! the chair and Messrs F. J. Carr, G. j Watson, J. .1. McCarthy, Ceo. Bailey/ and Henry Paterson. The Springs County Council wrote, asking for the use of the stone crusher; to crush about 600 cubic yards of metal : at the Cemetery Pit. It was decided ■ that the work could be undertaken after j the council had put out about 1000 cubic; yards in the West Melton and Yald-' I hurst Ridings. ! The Hospital and Charitable Aid I Board wrote, stating that the county's, contribution to the Hospital Board for, the year ending March 31, 1917, is £1389 16/8, an increase of over £.'100; above last year's amount. The Selwyn County Council wrote, stating that a meeting of delegates from the Springs, Ellesmere, Heathcote, Malvern, Paparua, and Selwyni Counties and the Borough of Spreydon would be held on May 17, at 2 p.m., to discuss the question of subsidy payable, to the above bodies under the Selwyn County Subdivision Act, 1911. The! clerk "was appointed to represent the | council. The chairman reported that he had attended the Conciliation Coun-1 cil, when an agreement as to conditions' of labour in the county was arrived at. | Under the award,' although the rate of pay had been increased, the chairman; was of opinion that the earning capacity; of the individual workman had been; seriously curtailed by the restriction of. hours and compulsory holidays. Mr Paterson reported having attended j a meeting to consider the reply received j from the Canterbury Saleyards Com-! panv re the reriioval of the saleyards. j The* matter is still open, and a further j meeting will be held later. Mr Pater-, son was again appointed to represent the county. I The clerk's report detailed the work j done during the past month and the work proposed for the ensuing month.! A detailed statement of the grading j done in the West Melton Riding; showed that the cost per chain varied! from 5 2/3 d to 2/7, or an average cost! of a fraction over lOd per chain. On a number of roads, especially on the| Sandv Knolls-Rolleston Road, the side; of the road was practically reformed; at a total cost of 2/7 per chain. Re-! pairs to the Brain Road, Tai Tapu, were j also commenced during the month, and: would be completed in about one week. \ Patching work will be gone on with' during the month in Ladbrooks, Prebbleton, and Broadfields Ridings. Most of the drains have been cleaned during April, and drain cleaning will be con-; tinued during the present month. The clerk reported that he had re-1 ceived an unsigned letter which had been posted at Ladbrooks. He had. in conformity with the council's previous: decision "not to consider anonymous; communications, sent the letter back to the Ladbrooks Post Office to be exhibited there. The clerk reported that the letter contained nothing but what the' council would have been pleased to consider ami deal with had it come signed, by any ratepayers. The council approved the clerk's action, and reaffirmed its previous resolution not to have unsigned letter placed before it.
