CMC AFFAIRS

THE CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.

The Christchurch City Council met last evening, there being present:—The Mayor (Mr H. Holland), Crs G. Scott, J. O. Jameson, A. Williams, J. W. Beanland, A. S. Taylor, W. Millar, E. Peck, J. McCombs, M.P., J. Reynolds, I). G. Sullivan, 11. F. Herbert, and F. Burgoyne. MUNICIPAL RATH.

Letters were received from the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association and the Christchurch Ladies' Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club, dissociating those bodies from the petitions which have been placed before the council recently, with respect to the management of the Municipal Tepid Rath. The Christchurch Ladies' Club expressed perfect satisfaction with the staff at the baths. At the conclusion of its ordinary business the council went into committee to consider the position with regard to the petitions.

When the council came out of committee, the Mayor reported that the following resolutions had been carried:—"(l) That the services of the second male attendant be dispensed with; (2) that the custodian be instructed to enforce the by-laws relating to misbehaviour in baths; (3) that no person or persons be allowed to teach swimming at the baths without the consent of the council, provided that a husband may teach his wife or child or any member of the family." These resolutions were formally adopted. DOMAIN RATE. A request was received from the Christchurch Domains Roard thai the council forgo its claim for £5(5 14/9 for commission on the collection of the city's contribution to the funds of the board. Cr Williams moved that the request be refused. He said that the council was put to great expense in collecting the rate, and it got no return. It did the collecting simply to oblige the board and save it extra expense.

The Mayor pointed out that the board had no power to levy on the ratepayers individually, but simply on the council. He understood that no specific rate was struck for the city's contribution. A threat had been thrown out that if this council persisted in sharing commission the other councils contributing to the board's funds would follow suit.

Cr Burgoyne seconded Cr Williams's motion, and said that the council charged other bodies for collecting their rates. The motion was carried. ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER. The Electric Light and Power Committee reported that a number of maximum demand current Hinders were being ordered from England. This is a device which can be installed at the option of the consumer in lieu of the present maximum demand meter. A set of claims for a proposed new award had been forwarded by the Electrical Workers' Union, but the committee decided to take no action in the matter. During the past fortnight 28 applications for current had been received, and 52 connections had been made. The report was adopted. WORKS AND SANITARY COMMITTEE. The Works and Sanitary Committee, which had received a report from Dr Pearson, bacteriologist at the Christchurch Hospital, on his analysis of samples of disinfectants submitted to the council, recommended that Blackburn and Smith's tender of 5/6 a gallon for fluid disinfectant and Dalgety and Co.'s tender of 18/- per cwt for powder disinfectant be accepted. The District Health Officer had reported that the Avon Bond, Oxford Terrace, was insanitary and unfit for human occupation, and he recommended that llw.' owner be required to have certain work carried out. If the owner was not prepared to have this work completed in four weeks the District Health Officer recommended that the place be ordered to be pulled down. The committee recommended that the owner be notified accordingly. The report was adopted.
