' SIR CLEMENTS MARKHAM. By Cabii.—Press Association, — Copyright. LONDON, January 31. The death is announced of Sir Clements Markham, K.C.8., VMS., the result of shock from burns, caused by a lire at his residence. [Born at Stilliiigfclt in 18;;fl, Sir Clements Markham became a ir.ival cadet at Uio age of H, and passed as lieutenant in 1850, severing his connection with the. Navy in the following year. His name in closely associated with the hitler day history of Arctic and Antarctic exploration. About the time of his retirement from the Navy lie served in the Arctic Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, and has left his impressions on record in his hook, "franklin's Footsteps." Next he did exploring work in Peru and the forests of the Fast Indies, his travels in the former country resulting In the introduction of the ((limine yielding cinchona trees from Peru into British India. One of Sir Clements Markliam's companions in a portion of his travels was the Hon. Sir Charles IJowen, M.Ii.C, of Christchurch. Alter holding several civic secretarial posts he served (1807Ii 8) as geographer to the Abyssinian Expedition, and was present at the storming of I Magdaln. lie received a "Grand Prix" at the Paris Exhibition in 18(57, and received [ the honour of K.C.B. in 18%. He was ' created by the King of Portugal a Conimcnda tor of the Order of Christ, and by the j Emperor of Brazil a Chevalier of the Order nl the Hose. He became secretary and then j president of Ihe Royal Geographical Society, I secretary and president o' the Ilakluyt SoI ciety, and in IS'.IU was the president of the j International Geographical Congress. Sir Clements was instrumental in bringing about several Arctic and Antarctic expediItions.l
