' SIR CLEMENTS MARKHAM. By Cabii.—Press Association, — Copyright. LONDON, January 31. The death is announced of Sir Clements Markham, K.C.8., VMS., the result of shock from burns, caused by a lire at his residence. [Born at Stilliiigfclt in 18;;fl, Sir Clements Markham became a ir.ival cadet at Uio age of H, and passed as lieutenant in 1850, severing his connection with the. Navy in the following year. He became secretary and then j president of Ihe Royal Geographical Society, I secretary and president o' the Ilakluyt SoI ciety, and in IS'.IU was the president of the j International Geographical Congress. Sir Clements was instrumental in bringing about several Arctic and Antarctic expediItions.l
