February 3—Nelson T.C. Annual. February 7—Poverty Ray T.C. Annual. February 8 N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. Summer. TURF TOPICS. Several Canterbury trainers who were at Dunedin for the Forbury Park Trolling (Tub's Meeting identified a horse, whose bona fides have been under suspicion for some time, as a one-time well-known performer on Canterbury tracks. As the result of a couple of wins at Takapuna on Saturday, B. Deeley again heads his nearest rival, J. O'Shca, in the list of winning jockeys. Summer Pose and Pre-eminent fell in the Ferry Handicap at Takapuna on Saturday, but neither the horses nor their respective riders, P>. Deeley and Carmont, were any the worse for the accident. Two early visitors to Riccarton for next Saturday's meeting are R. Berry's pair, Kent-Loch and Ringform. When conlestirg the Orewa Hurdles at Takapuna on Saturday, Ngapoto. the five-year-old son of Maniapoto and La Jesse, fell and broke his back. Fortunately the gelding's rider, L. Traill, escaped with very minor injuries. The Woodville Jockey Club receives entries for its Autumn Meeting up till this evening. Empcrador will be ridden in his Egmont engagements by R. Hatch. lit consequence of the postponement of the Takapuna Meeting, Merry Roe is hardly likely to be sent south for the Egmont Meeting. Owners are given a final reminder that entries for the February meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club close with Mr A. I. Rattray at 8 o'clock this evening. A. J. McFlynn met with a nasty accident at the Dargaville meeting. He received a kick in the mouth from a mare, losing several teeth, and he was lucky to get off with that damage. Amongst the winners at Warwick Farm on January 15 was the chestnut filly Contented (Achilles—Berceuse), a full sister to Hushabye. She scored in the Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, and started a rank outsider. Amongst the unplaced division was Mr E. J. Watt's Indian King (Mountain King—Bee Bee). The riding of M'Lachlan on the lastnamed did not suit the stipendiaries, who informed the rider that though opposed to the unnecessary flogging of two-year-olds, it was desirable to show vigour for a lilllc distance before sitting up on a seemingly beaten two-year-old. The Government benefited to the extent of £503 as tax on the lolalisator receipts at the Forbury Park Trolling Club's Summer Meeting. The American-bred mare, Alice Shaw, made her New Zealand debut in the Musselburgh Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. Sinshowed a fair amount of speed in

patches, but was too green to maintain her effort. One of the best looking green horses seen out at the Forbury Park Meeting was Bon Patch, who scored ;i creditable win in the Musselburgh Handicap. He was got in America, and foaled in New Zealand. Capriccio made amends for her unlucky defeat on the first day of the Forbury Park Meeting by appropriating the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday. In getting to tbc end of the two miles in 4min 10 2-5 the daughter of O.Y.M. can now take rank as one of the most promising saddle horses seen out this season. After letting her connections down badly on several occasions Maud Tracey showed that the early support accorded her had good justification by winning tbc Second Amateur Handicap at Forbury Park in the smart time of 3min 43scc. There was a Calling off in the lotalisalor receipts on both days of the Forbury Park Trotting Club's Meeting, and when the totals came to be made up the deficiency was found to stand at £39(50. When the Forbury Park track is at its best it is undoubtedly one of the fastest in the Dominion. Evidence of this was forthcoming in several of the events on Saturday last, and in the Forbury Handicap Don C.-csar established a fresh race record for two miles of Iniin 28 2-ssec. The solid pace set by Evelyn and Succeed in the early stages of the contest gave the back markers little chance of reducing their handicaps. Entering the concluding circuit Don Caesar -put in a particularly fine effort, and staying on much better than in most of his previous efforts just got up in lime to defeat Evelyn on the post. The latter also bettered any of her former showings by going hnin 33 3-sscc, and it was bad luck for her owner to run against Don Caesar when in such great form. The only regrettable happening in connection with the Forbury Park Trotting Club's Meeting was the fall sustained by Our Thorpe when giving a speed exhibition between the second and third races on Saturday. Going off at a great pace the champion aroused the enthusiasm of the crowd by reeling off his first quarter in 32 3-,") sec. A few strides further on he shied at something on the track and turned a complete somersault. His driver, A. Fleming, was thrown clear and at once freed the horse from his sulky and harness. On returning to the enclosure Our Thorpe was found to have damaged his knees rather badly and was bleeding from the nose. Though the full extent of his injuries has not yet been discovered it is quite certain that O.Y.M.'s sou will require a lengthy spell, and it is probable that his proposed trip to the American (irand Circuit Meetings will have to he abandoned. The poor support accorded the Royal Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday holds out little inducement for the southern club to include similar races on future programmes. Out of 11 entrants only three were paid up for and the accident to Our Thorpe reduced the event to a match between the Ashburton-trained pair Eccentric and Emmclinc,, Evidently the latter was not on her best behaviour for she did not begin with anything like her accustomed brilliancy, and Eccentric beat her decisively. As the winner took 2min 48 2-,") sec to complete the 12 furlongs he was decidedly lucky in missing the opposition of Our Thorpe, as at the November meeting the latter went 2min 11 2-sscc in the Free For All, and in Saturday's race he was only asked to concede Eccentric 3sec. The Takapuna Jockey Club's Meeting will he concluded on Wed-

nesday, when the leading attractions will be the Jockey Club Handicap and Anniversary Welter Handicap. Taringamutu is to be given a lengthy spell and may not sport silk again till next spring. Though each of A. Pringle's seven mounts on the first day of the Forbury Pa'rk Meeting were dividend payers, a pound invested on each of them would only have shown a profit of £l2 12/0. TEMPLAR.
