Sir Joseph Ward, Minister of Finance, left for Wellington by last night 'a ferry steamer.

It is understood that Mr C. K. Pollen, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Canterbury Province, will retire on March 31 next.

His Excellency the Governor arrived in Christchureh by the second express from the south last evening, and went on to Wellington. Mr J. Caughley, Assistant Director of Education, left for Wellington last night on departmental business. He will return to Christchureh to-morrow.

A motion congratulating the secretary of the Woolston Fire Board (Mr W. J. Caulfield), on his recovery from his recent illness, was carried at last night's meeting of the board. The "London Gazette" of October 13 notifies the appointment of Lieut. James W. H. Scotland, Unattached List, New Zealand Military Forces, to the military wing of the Royal Flying Corps. Mr E. J. Righton, general manager of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., and Mrs Righton, who have been spending a holiday on the West Coast, left Christchureh last night to return north.

Mr J. Colvin, MJ\, and Mr B. McCallum, M.P., motored to Lincoln with Dr Thacker, M.P., yesterday afternoon. Mr McCallum intends to voyage to Egypt in about three weeks' time, to pay"ah unofficial visit of inspection.

Sapper P. S. Wilkinson, who arrived by the Maheno, was invalided from Pope's Post as a typhoid patient, after having spent four months in the firing line. Afterwards the doctors designated the trouble as heart strain. He improved considerably on the voyage.

On Wednesday the death occurred at Invercargill of ,Mr Andrew McCallum, son of the late Mr Archibald McCallum, of McCallum and Co., timber merchants. The deceased was born in Invercargill in 1875, and was educated at the Southland Boys' High School. He leaves a widow and five children.

Mr Frank E. Ward has resigned his position as assistant general secretary of the Auckland Y.M.C.A. in order to take up work as an agricultural instrnc-' tor, for which he received special train- J ing at the Hawkesbury Agricultural j College, New South Wa'les. He leaves, Wellington on the 14th inst. on a visit I to his people in Tasmania. The death occurred at an early hour this morning of Mrs John Harper, sen., i at the age of 89. The deceased, who! was one of the band of pioueers who arrived in the ship Randolph in 1852, had resided in Ferry Road for over 60 years. She is survived by Mr Harper, who is just on 90 years of age. There are. about ISO children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mr P. M. Velvin, the secretary in charge of the Boys' Gordon Hall work,! leaves Christehnrch to-night as a Field j Service representative of the Y.M.C.A., to sail with the next Eeinforeement. ! Mr Velvin goes to this work as a well-! trained man, having had training in ' America and this country, and will add strength to the workers already sent out ■ from Christehnrch in the persons of Mr James L. Hay and Mr ",V. H. Ilislop. The members of the National Executive made a presentation of a wristlet watch | to Mr Velvin.

Dr A. McGregor Grant, acting medical superintendent of the Auckland District Hospital, who has received a commission -as a captain in the New Zealand Medical Corps, will vacate his position at the hospital on the 14th inst. He was appointed acting medical superintendent in place of Major C. E. Maguire, who is on the staff of No. 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital, 12 months ago. Dr A. W. MeKelvey, at present superintendent of the Costley Home, has been temporarily appointed acting medical superintendent of the hospital.

The death took place at Lyttelton yesterday morning of Mr Leslie Jones, a resident of the Port, at the early age of 30 years. Deceased, who had been ailing for only three weeks, was the second son of Mr A. C. Jones, of Lin-

wood Avenue, Christehurch, and wis employed right up to the time of his death by Messrs T. Gapes and Co., of Victoria Street. Mr Jones was a very enthusiastic cricketer and hockey player, being a member of the Adding ton Club. He was also a member of the Metropolitan Trotting Club. He is survived Il3' one sou, his wife having pre-deceased him exactly five years ago.

Mr E. G. Stapp (formerly of Nelson), who is at present chie'f clerk in the Telegraph Office at Christchureh, has ibeen appointed postmaster at Feilding. I Archdeacon Garland, who was the j organiser of the recent Bible-in-Sc hools 'movement in New Zealand, is now a chaplain with the Australian Forces. He ,is working amongst the hospitals at Alexandria.

I Trooper E. L. Button (Canterbury ! Mounted Rifles), who is well-known in I local athletic circles, was sent to Malta, suffering froui enteric fever, after a I long spell in the firing line on Gallipoli j Peninsula. Trooper Button is now uni der orders to return to New Zealand. The death is recorded in the "Bajmoan Times" of December 11 of Mr ; Lancelot Indermaur, District Officer for i the Ellice Group of Islands, and a DeI puty Commissioner of the Western Paci;fic. The deceased, who was a Cam- | bridge graduate, was formerly at Tonga, I in practice.

The Rev. D. Rankin, curate of Bt. ! Mary's Chureh, Merivale, underwent a I slight operation on Monday, which will I necessitate his absence from parish work | for about a fortnight. In the course of ■ a few weeks the Rev. Mr Rankin will take up his duties as vicar in charge of I the East Oxford Cure.
