The following letter has been received by the Christehurch Branch of the ; British • Red Cross Society, dated from the St. John Ambulance Warehouse, [London, November 19, 1915:—"I am .writing to acknowledge the safe arrival lof the splendid gift of 27 cases of welcome clothing and comforts from New iZealand, which we duly received here a few days ago, but I waited to write I until they had been unpacked and listed, as I wanted to be able to tell you howgrateful we are for so valuable a gift. 1 hope that you will express to the contributors in New Zealand our sincere thanks for their sympathy and for their practical expression of it. The gift will Ibe reported on Thursday to the Ladies' I Committee of the Order, which meets under the chairmanship of Adeline, , Duchess of Bedford, who was appointed by her Majesty the Queen, our president. The demands on us continue to be very heavy, and it is a true help and encouragement to have these consignments from our friends and supporters oversea.—Yours faithfully, Agnes Jekyll, Chairman of Warehouse."
KOWAI COUNTY RED CROSS AND PATRIOTIC FUNDS. AMKEBLEY AND SEFTON GALAS. The balance-sheet of the galas held at Amberley and Sefton, in aid of the Kowai County Bed Cross and Patriotic Funds, shows a credit-balance of £1036 0/7, less unpresented cheques to the value of £lO 6/5. The receipts totalled £1698 5/-, made up as follow:—Concerts and socials: Amberley, Dr Thompson's .(including Hag) £7B 10/6, P. G. Lewton's £69 8/-; Sefton, Mrs Bailev's £l7 5/9, gala night £57 6/9; Amberley Oddfellows' social £l3 19/7, Leithfield £4 18/3; donations, Amberley £462 2/5, Sefton £62 10/-; flags (on ground), Graham, Wilson, & Smellie (Amberley), £75 4/-, Farmers' Co-op. (Sefton) £57 1/-; gates and tickets, Amberley £45 18/-, Sefton £4O 17/-; Miss Hook (G. B. Starky's), Amberley £l2 3/-, Sefton £27 9/6; home produce, Amberley £22 14/4, Sefton £2l 4/10; luncheons and teas, Amberley £62 14/9, Sefton £SO 1/1; produce, Amberley £75 19/1, Sefton £BO 4/2; stalls, Amberley £lO7 7/6, Sefton £lO2 17/1; side shows, sports, etc., Amberley £92 10/9, Sefton £33 17/9; pony (D. The expenditure ' was £172 10/10, which included a refund of £93 0/9 to the County Council on account of disbursements on behalf of Red Cross material and goods, advertising and printing £3O 11/9, expenses at Sefton gala £2l 18/3, expenses at Amberlev gala £ll 17/7, and hire of tents £l2 10/5. The amounts secured by the canvassers were as follow: —Collected by Messrs C. T. Weld and G. H. McLean in Leithfield district £l4l 10/6; by Mr F. Beeves in Saltwater Creek district, £5 7/-, and quantity of produce; by Messrs Bnrgen and Hale, in Broomfield district, £O2 2/6: by Messrs A. Nicholls and C, M. Bruce, £55 1/10; by Messrs J. Rowe and T. Hamia, £2l 6/-, 1 pony, 4 sheep, and large quantity of produce; and bv Mrs Courage, Amberley, £1 2/6.
