AN OMINOUS QUIETNESS.
THE DARDANELLES EVACUATION. PUBLIC WILL BE CRITICAL. 'Tim'*" atu! 'Sydney Sun" Serriee*. LONDON, January 3. i In an article in the "Daily Mail" Mr Lovat Fraser says the quietness jin England is ominous. It means i that the people will be much more j critical for the remainder of the ;war, and will not accept in silence 'a repetition of the Dardanelles. The ! meaning of the Dardanelles has j slowly sunk into the national mind, ■and the jubilation about the evacuation, which has been overdone, can- ! not efface it. The country will acIcept compulsion, but it regards as peculiarly appalling the possibility | of men being taken from their homes j and forced to be the victims of Ministerial bungles. The Dardanelles will affect the attitude of the people | towards every Ministry in war-time ; for many a future decade.
