Mr Hughes has removed the embargo on the Australian Remington Typewriter Company, on the ground that it has no actual connection with the American firm. GERMAN SPIES. "PROFESSORS" YISIT AUSTRALIA. Startling revelations have been i made concerning four German proi lessors who visited Australia with ! the members of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. (They represented themselves to be neutrals, and two were subsequently interned as German spies. Another was arrested en route to England , with war maps of the Australian j possessions. SPURT IN^RECRUITING. PAY OF OFFICERS. SYDNEY. January 4. The issue of the War Census cards, j accompanied by Mr Hughes's pergonal appeal, is already telling a tale. 'Recruiting in the various States dur- ! ing the past few days has been most I encouraging, and a spurt is pending. A new scale of pay for officers (serving with the Expeditionary ; Forces is being enforced from the i beginning of the month. The new j scale not only considerably reduces !salaries, but entails refunds over a • period of four months, owing to the i regulation being ante-dated.
