VAST OPERATIONS.
PRIPET TO RUMANIAN FRONTIER. ACTIVITY ON A FRONT OF 170 MILES. (Received January •">, S.fiO a.m.) LONDON, January 4. The "Daily Telegraph's" Petrograd correspondent says:— ''The curtain is lifting on vast operations between the Pripel and the Rumanian frontier. It is now clear that the Allies are active practically on the whole front, extending for 170 miles, and have pushed hack the enemy at more than one point. It is believed that Generals von Mackensen and Pfianzer are commanding, the latter at (■zernowitz. A semi-official estimate gives the AustroGerman strength south of Pripet at 1,500,000. The Russian attack was sudden and unexpected, and disconcerted the enemy, whose costly mudworks are now deliquescent, and the trenches are untenable owing to the inrush of water. Many of the prisoners taken have been frost-bitten. Numbers of Germans are surrendering, in consequence of a Russian placard saying that deserters would be taken in daily at a certain place and hour.
