PERSONALS.

His Excellency the Governor paid a visit of inspection to the King George Seamen's Institute at Lytteltou yesterday afternoon. He was accompanied by Mr M. J. Miller, a member of the Board of Directors. Sir George Clifford arrived by the ferry steamer this morning. Sir John Findlay, K.C., was a passenger by the Mararoa this morning. Mr C. P. Skerrett, K.C., arrived from Wellington by the Mararoa this morning. Drs Vie and Bowie were passengers from Sydney by the Moeraki this morning. Major Overton and Captain Baldwin were passengers by the ferry steamer this morning. Mr 11. F. Toogood arrived from the north yesterday on professional business. \He will return north this evening. Lieutenant-Colonel F. T. Bellringer, of New Plymouth, has been notified to j report at Trent ham for duty on January 10. The following arc among the guests at Coker's Hotel: —Captain Anderson (Burnham), H. W. Wilkins (Akaroa), and H. Maeandrew (Hokitika). Mr Fraser Mackenzie, who has held the position of Government valuer at Auckland for some time past, has received notice of his transfer to Dunedin. Private George Greig, of Rangiora, who left with the Main New Zealaud Expeditionary Force, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and is still with the 13th North Canterbury and Westland Regiment. Captain A. S. Podmore, of the Geraldine Salvation Army Corps, has received notice of his removal from Geraldine to another sphere of active service in the Army. He will take farewell of his comrades about January 6.

Mr Cyrus Williams, engineer to the ■ Lyttelton Harbour Board, has just eoneluded his fortnight's holiday, during which time he inspected the harbour works at Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Weilington, Napier, and Auckland. Major Bartrop has been advised, through an officer in the same brigade, that his son (who was well known throughout Canterbury) died "a gallant soldier's death" on August 8. The letter states: —"When all the officers} of his company had been put out of action, Ludlow Bartrop gathered the men together, and led the final charge, and was shot on the top of a Turkish parapet." On New Year's Eve a euchre party' and social was held in the Little River Town Hall to bid farewell to eight troopers who are leaving for Trentham. The hall was crowded, and the function | was one of the most successful e%-er held in the district. During the even-1 ing Mr J. 0. Coop, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, presented a safetv razor and a money belt to each of the guests, Troopers K. Mackey, George Newton, H. Kay, Wynn Manson, S. Pepper, 11. Tozer, Harold Bray, and Fred Hemingway. Captain A. W. Owles, of New Brighton, has received an interesting letter from his son, Lieut. Alfred Owles, who : is now attached to the South African Military Forces. Lieut. Owles, who served through the recent eompaign | with General Botha, has been appointed to the command of first transport which is to go to German East Africa, having been specially selected for this dutv l.v the Director of Transports, Col. Hosken. Lieut. Owles is in good health, and is : looking forward to his work with his usual keenness.

The deceased was for 15 years a member of the teaching profession, during which i time lie was headmaster of Cavershain ! Industrial .School, manager Buruham j Industrial School (Canterbury), and headmaster of Hamilton, lleriot, and Waiwera South .Schools respectively, relinquishing the latter position to join his brothers in farming operations, which he successfully carried on until within a short time of his death. lie is survived li\ a wife and two daughters.

Mr Allied Hill has been appointed professor of harmony and composition to the New Eolith Wales (Government, 1 Conservatoire of Music. Mr Hill received his musical education in New Zealand and at Leipzig (Germany). He |is well known as the composer of the I Maori cantata " Ilinenioa'' and opera "Tapu."' He also composed "When the Kmpjre Calls,'* a fine patriotic song, land his "Waiata l'oi" (song) has been sung all over the world. Mr Hill, who jwas at one time conductor of the Wellington Orchestral Society, was conductor of the Exhibition Orchestra at

Christchurch in litOti. Since that .late lie has resided in Syduey.

The death is announced of Sir George Seott Robertson, Liberal member for Central Bradford since 1906. The residents of Westerfield held a social gathering on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Privates R. D. Boon and J. Laffey, who are leaving for the front. During the evening each soldier was presented with a wristlet watch, suitably engraved.

A pleasant social evening was spent in the Motukarara Hall on New Year's Eve, when a large number of residents assembled to bid farewell to Privates Mcßae and Noyce, of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, who will soon be leaving on active service. Private Mcßae was presented with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch, and Private Noyce with an Autostrop safety razor.
