PERSONALS.
Bishop Julius paid a visit to Akaroa on Sunday last. He returned to Christchurch yesterday. Archdeacon and Mrs Jacob, of Timaril, are visiting Christchurch, and are staying at Coker's Hotel. Mr M. Hawkins (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch this morning, and is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Visitors to Christchurch staying at Warner's Hotel include Messrs M. O. White and N. E. Fraser (Timani), J. Dunlop and P. J. Callaghan (Dunedin), and J. A. Maefarlane (Hawke's Bay). Messrs W. Cunningham (Rangiora), L. McCartney (Auckland), and R. Smith (Westland) are staying at the United Service Hotel. They arrived in town this morning. Mr and Mrs E. J. Righton (Wellington) arrived from the West Coast last evening. Mr Righton is visiting Christchurch on the business of the New Zealand Pictures Supplies, Ltd. Amongst the latest arrivals at Coker 's Hotel are Messrs D. C. Peacock (Wellington), M. E. Herbert (Auckland), H. Webb (Ashburton), A. R. Chisholm (Port Chalmers), and V. A. Sligo (Greymouth). The death occurred at Queenstown last week of Mr Alexander Clarke, fields inspector for the Lakes district. He saw service in the South African war, being a member of the 4th Zealand Contingent. Miss M. E. Sandilands, Associate of the Otago University in Home Science, who has been acting as relieving Home Science teacher at the Christchurch Girls' High School, has been appointed by the Hawke's Bay Education Board to the position of Home Science teacher at the Gisborne Centre. The Right Rev. Dr Phelan, Roman Catholic Bishop of Sale, Victoria, the Right Rev. Dr Reville, Bishop of Sandhurst, and the Rev. Dr Ormond, secretary of the Papal Delegation, left Sydney by the Riverina for Auckland, on Thursday. It is probable that his Grace Archbishop Carr will also be a passenger by the Riverina. Archbishop Cerretti, the Papal Delegate, leaves Sydney on January 13, for Wellington. Private Henry Senior, of the Canterbury Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement, who returned to New Zealand by the Tahiti, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Christmas Day, died from typhoid fever in the Dunedin Hospital on Friday morning. Private Senior, who was 30 years of age, had spent four months and a half in the trenches at Gallipoli. He was the second son of Mr John Senior, of Biunnerton, and prior to enlisting was employed in the North Brunner mine. On Sunday the deceased was accorded a military funeral.
