DEATH IN A TRAM OAR.

While Mr Jolin Colville Lane, a teller in, the National Bank of New Zealand, was coming into the city this morning, on a tram car from Edgeware Road, he suddenly collapsed. Assistance was promptly given, but it was found that life was extinct. Deceased was the fourth son of Mr John Lane, part owner of the Ashburton Woollen Mills, and was 33 years old. He had been in the service of the National Bank for about 15 years—first in Timaru, then in Cromwell, later in Stratford, and then, for the past six or' seven years, in Christchurch. He was very much respected and trusted by the bank, and was regarded as a most efficient officer. He leaves a widow and one child. Mr A. B. Lane, news editor of The Sun, is an elder brother of the deceased.

The late Mr J. C. Lane had been suf fering from heart trouble.

A COLLISION. While returning from Amberley on a motor cycle, at about 9.30 p.m. on Friday, a young man named Reginald Harrison, whose parents reside at Merivale Lane, St. Albans, collided with a gig while passing through Kaiapoi. He received a severe wound in the neck, probably caused by contact with a shaft. .. The mishap occurred : outside the residence of Dr J. H. C!rawsha;w, who rendered prompt assistance. The, sufferer was taken to the Kaiapoi Nursing Home, where he is reported to be progressing favourably. :

KILLED BY A TRAIN. Press Association. ' GREYMOUTH, December 26. ; Hugh McLeod, married, aged 55 years, met with a shocking accident on Thursday. He and a companion were riding bicycles on the railway track between Ruru and Moana, and the Otira express for Greymouth caught McLeod at a curve. His skull was fractured and his right leg broken. He was taken on board the train, but died before it arrived at Greymouth. Deceased was a sawmill hand, employed by Messrs Nyberg Brod., of Ruru.
