HALSWELL SPORTS.

FOR RED CROSS FUNDS.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.

Despite the rather windy weather the annual sports held under the auspices of the Halswell Sports Club in the Halswell Domain to-day were entirely successful. The arrangements were very complete, and the attendance in the afternoon was very fair. The whole of the proceeds were in aid of the local Red Cross Fund, and there appears to be no doubt that the fund will be considerably augmented as the result of the club's efforts. Derry's Private Band was in attendance, and rendered selections throughout the day. In addition to a large number of side shows, exhibitions of Highland dancing were given, and a very fine programme of sports was gone through. Although the entries for the various sports events >vere not so large as in previous years, they were nevertheless very fair, and the racing itself was well up to the usual

standard. Mr C. Ball was judge of the Highland events. The Boy Scouts were present during the day, and gave entertaining displays of marching and other work. Lieut. Hawkins was in command of the Scouts, and Lieut.Colonel J. Murphy judged the competitions. The Senior Cadets also gave an attractive display of routemarching.

The principal officials were as follow:—President, Mr W. L. Wright; secretary, Mr E. T. Moyna; judge, Mr J. E. Ferguson ; starter, W. Hayes. Hie luncheon tent was conducted by Mrs J. E. Ferguson, and a palmist tent by Mrs Ileys. Amongst those present was the Hon. C. A. G. Hardy, M.L.C. One of the competitors in the Highland events was Miss Ruby Phillips, of Auckland, a little dancer six years of age, who had no fewer than 29 medals, all won in open competition. This was the first occasion on which this talented young dancer had entered into any competitions in the South Island, all the previous distinctions having been gained in the North Island. She is the holder of the "Points" medal for children under 12 years of age. While in Auckland, Miss Phillips was interviewed by Miss Ellen Terry, who expressed admiration for her, and Wanted to lake her to England. I Following are the results:—

MARRIED MEN'S CYCLE HACK. Two miles.—Frank Dempsey 1, L. Huuim 2. There were live entries. BOYS' CYCLE RACE. One mile.—A. Hayes I, 15. Kccnc 2. There were lour entries.
