SEA OF MARMORA.
BRITISH SUBMARINE'S CRUISE.
A RECORD OF DESTRUCTION.
LONDON, December 23,
A British submarine officer, describing a 24 days' cruise in the Sea ci' Marmora, says:— "We were under fire, on an average, three times a day. We penetrated into all sorts of places. We shelled a railway, and blocked the line as a troop train was coming up. It was the funniest thing in the world to see the train hiding in the trees. We smashed it all to blazes, and the troops scuttled. They fired tons of ammunition, but we were out of rangq. "Altogether, we sank a gunboat, five steamers, and 17 large sailers, and destroyed three trains and one railway embankment. We dived into Constantinople Harbour, torpedoed the arsenal wharf, and blew up lighters loaded with munitions. The explosion was terrific. We had a duel with a gunboat, which was driven off. After that we were left —everything ran when we were near. The only drawback was that we all suffered from dysentery." ATHENS, December 24.
Recent storms carried away the booms which the Turks had constructed across the Narrows, in the Dardanelles. The Allies' submarines profited by this, and passed into the Sea of Marmora.
