The oldest of European newspapers are mere babies compared with those of China. According to a French authority, the "Peking News" has now been appearing regularly for a matter of 1300 years, having been issued first in the sixth century. This might be difficult to prove, but there is no doubt that the "Peking Gazette," contain ing Imperial rescripts and official news, dates back at least to the ninth century, and is still going strong.
