EXCISING SCENE ON AUCKLAND

It «jvas reported that a young man of military age was about to leave the and about 30 of his fellow-employees assembled on the wharf, having obtained an hour's leave from their employer to see the departing visitor before he left New Zealand's shores. *"•>
As he arrived with his luggage there were loud cries of "shirker."
The cart containing the would-be passenger and his luggage was turned round and led up the wharf, and was not allowed to return until the ship was clear of the wharf. Meanwhile the so-called shirker had a lively 10 minutes, and eventually a jeeriug crowd accompanied the cart and the badly-scared occuprait for a long way up the street.
Ann Eliabeth Thomas, a woman 66 years of age, died at 116 Kingsley. Street, Sydenham, at about 2.20 a.m. this morning. She had been ailing for some time. Dr Marks attended her about six months ago, and this morning I)r Thomas was summoned, but on his arrival the 'woman was dead. An inquest will be held at 5 p.m. to-day.
