RIVER BANK CARNIVAL
EVERY PENNY FOR THE FUND.
*ln connection with the River Bank Carnival, to be held on December 16 (Anniversary Day), in aid of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund several rumours have been.in circulation that the expenses are unnecessarily high, and that some of the officials are receiving exorbitant fees. Mr W. J. Jenkin, president of the Carnival Committee, has found it necessary to contradict these rumours, which have no foundation in fact. Not a single official is receiving payment, in any form whatever, for his services, and the expenses of running the carnival arc being kept down to the absolute minimum. Practically all the necessary work is being done free of charge, and the material is being supplied gratis. Carting is also done free. As soon as the carnival is over full accounts, audited by a city accountant, will be supplied to all the newspapers.
As an example of the kind of criticism to which the committee has been subjected, Mr Jenkin said that some persons had pointed out that at committee meetings various sums are voted for such purposes as the purchase of prizes. As a matter of fact, Mr Jenkins says, the money so voted has been donated to the committee for that very purpose. Many people have preferred giving money for the purchase of prizes to donating the prizes themselves. All the money expended is being laid out in such a way that it will bring a handsome profit. The arrangements are such that practically every penny taken at the carnival will be paid over to the Patriotic Fund.
