RECRUITING BOARD.
PROBLEM OF GETTING MEN. The North Canterbury Recruiting Board met yesterday, Mr J. M. Turnbull presiding. There were also present Captain Northcote, and Messrs P. R. Climie, J. D. Millton, and C. W. Hervey (secretary). It was decided to endeavour to set up local committees in each district within the area, and to ask the Mayors or the chairmen of road districts to assist.' Mr Climie suggested that the best way to reach the shirkers was to get the names of those men not doing their duty from agents of the Automobile Association in the country, a personal canvass of such men following. The matter was left in the hands of the secretary to report at the next meeting. Mr Climie moved that steps should be taken to have the position of the board defined regarding the necessary expenditure.—lt was decided to leave this question for Colonel Chafl'ey to deal with. A suggestion that the board should be gazetted was also approved, but it was decided that no action in that respect should be taken until Colonel Chaffey had been consulted. Captain Northcote said the country recruiting meetings were insufficiently advertised. Many country people came to Christchurch to enlist, whereas they could have done so near their own doors.
