GERMANY'S FOOD SUPPLY
.. . m BOOMING THE ARTIFICIAL GOODS NOURISHING "WHALE-FISH" FLESH. The Germans are- continually shouting from the housetops that the economic conditions of the country are excellent, that they have more than enough food not only' to sup-
ply the forces in the field, but even to maintain the civil population in comfort, if not in luxury, for the next 12 months.
A glance at the advertising pages of the "Berliner Tagebiatt" tells a somewhat different tale. In its cuerent issue there appear advertisements lauding the marvellous nutritive properties of "artificial omelettes," "artificial butter," "chemical honey and jam," "artificial coffee and milk," and other dainties which can be purchased in packets at prices ranging from 2d to 4d each. The most appetising of these anil oiincements is the following:— THE CHEAPEST MEAT OF ALL For Internment Camps, Institutions, and Large Families is WHALE-FLESH. Most Nutritious and Albuminous. In 2001b Kegs at £3. It seems to be recognised that the prospect thus held out is not a particularly alluring one, for it is thoughtfully added that "the most eminent scientists are agreed that fish is excellent brain-forming material"! Do German scientists also maintain that a whale is a fish?
