LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.
m CANTERBURY HEAD CENTRE. A meeting of the committee of the Caaterbury head centre of the Royal Life-saving Society was held last evening, Mr K. Bassett presiding. j The executive reported that it had; no recommendation to make in connection with Mr B. J. Ager's motion at the previous meeting regarding the agreerifents between the New Brighton Surf Bathing Club and the Sumner branches of the society and the centre. The sub-committee set up in connection with the Red Cross had recommended to the executive that a grant from the funds of the J society should be made to the Red Cross. The executive had gone into the matter very carefully and was of opinion that as the money had been received for the specific purpose of life-saving, a grant could not be made towards any other object.
It was also reported that there was one large class of school boys from various schools in training for the elementary certificate, and also two classes of students, one male and one female, from the training college. Efforts were being made to organise a ladies' class for ladies' nights, and also a men's class. The report was adopted. As this was the last meeting of the present committee, it was decided that consideration of a request from the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, that the life-saving centre should take over the control of the Sir John Hall Shield, should be deferred until the annual meeting. The Kaiapoi Swimming Club resigned from membership of the centre. The date for the annual meeting of the centre was fixed for Thursday, December 9.
