HEROES OF THE BATTLEFIELD. WILLIAM GREGORY. Private William Gregory, killed in actioif on November 14, was the son of Mr J. A. Gregory, of 33 Barbadoes Street, Sydenham. He left New Zealand in the Fifth Reinforcement, and was in the trenches from
August 8 until November 1.3. It was reported that he was suffering from paralysis of the larynx, but the next day his death was announced. Private Gregory was formerly employed at Addington Workshops. He was a line young fellow.
DRIVER TV A. JAMES.
Driver T. A. James, of the Howitzer Ammunition' Column, who is reported in hospital at Malta, is a son of Mr S. A. James, of the Beehive Stores, Sydenham. He left for the front with the sth Reinforcements. In a letter recently received by his relatives, Driver James ' states that he spent a hard month's work at the Dardanelles before he was invalided. He had managed to dodge the bullets
of "Johnny Turk," having been hit only once—on the back of the leg, by a spent bullet. The wound was very slight. At Malta, he says, they are treated like kings. "It is very funny after being in the firing line and grabbing what you can, to come here and have a good hot dinner served 011 a nice white cloth. The only trouble is I will get better too quick. I think it will be a long time yet before I get back home, but we must keep believing. 'Johnny Turk' has turned out a tougher customer than we expected, but we will fix him in the finish." Private Henry Coey Bollard, wounded and in hospital, is the son of Mr and Mrs Bollard, King Street, Rangiora. When the war broke out
he volunteered for service, Jbut was not He went Home, and joined the Royal Irish Rifles, with whom he saw service in France.
