ROLL OF HONOUR.
UNVEILED AT AVONSIDE. -,.'.,- ■■ ■ ; - i A tablet bearing the names of the members of the Avonside parish who have enlisted and the names of those who have fallen was yesterday unveiled by Col. H, Slater at the Holy Trinity Church, Avqnside. Canon- Pascoe, in inviting Col. Slater to perform .;tbe ceremony, said it.had been thought fitting that one who had Served; the parish for at least 40 years as vestryman, churchwarden, and synodsman, and who had been prominent in public life and in striving to advance that patriotic spirit which was sending young men out to serve the Empire, should be asked to unveil the tablet. *
Col. Slater expressed pride in assisting to unveil a record of the names of those who were serving their country so,, nobly. He had been associated with Canon Pascoe in many tasks and he felt that, now tliey were old men, it was a splendid coping stone of their work that they should take part in such a ceremony. How little they had thought, years ago, when they were young, that one day the young men would go from New Zealand to fight in such a gigantic war. The tablet was a record of great sacrifice which would preserve the patriotic spirit hY the parish for ever. Col. Slater then removed the Union Jack from the tablet and the ceremony concluded.
