CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
WARNINGS AND PROSECUTIONS The annual report of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals presented to tjie society last night gives details of the cautions issued, and prosecutions made during the past year. Two hundred cautions were issued to the owners of horses and they comprised, starving and neglecting horses 36, working horses lame or with sores 51, cruelly exposing without food 28, cruelly illtreating with whip 8. Thirty-two warnings were issued relating to cows, including 10 for overstocking, eight for withholding suitable food, and six for travelling .newly calved cows. There were 23 cautions in the matter of cruelty to calves and 59 for cruelty to store cattle, 50 of which were for overcrowding in trucks. There were 13 warnings for the ill-treatment of sheep, including „ i three cases of yarding with broken I'
legs. Fifty-six dogs had been destroyed through injury and disease, and 68 cats for the same reason* There were nine cases in which the society had . prosecuted, all of them being for 1 cruelty to horses; Of this number, two were two pleaded guilty and werejfined sums of £3 and £1 respectively, arid live others who pleaded not guilty were also convicted arid fined sums ranging from £1 to £lO.
