CARBONATE OF LIME.
WAIPARA COUNTY DEPOSIT. Mr Henry Holland of Waikari, who is at present engaged in superintending, on behalf of the Waipara County Council, the operation of sending away to various places, the soft carbonate of lime present in the district forwards some information regarding the County Council's intention in the matter.
He states that the object of the County Council is not to do business with the lime, but to assist in finding out its value, in a practical way, for agricultural purposes. Up to the present some 33 tons have been sent away to 22 different places to be used by the Agricultural Department on experimental plots. Another 60 tons are to be sent to various places if arrangements for free railway carriage can be made. The deposit now being utilised is from a hillside on the road, and the quantity immediately available is not sufficient to comply with all the orders coming to hand. It is intended, however, that Mr McTaggart, of the Agricultural Department, will shortly visit the district to make further investigations not only in regard to the lime, but also to continue the search for phosphate rock, it being thought by geologists that deposits of this rock should be found somewhere in the Waipara or Kowai county districts. Mr Holland also forwards a copy of a letter he has received from a correspondent, saying that he had successfully experimented with a drill which thoroughly smashed up the lumps, thus solving the problem of effectively using and distributing the lime, in practical agricultural work.
