WELL-BORING.
AT DIAMOND HARBOUR. At last night's meeting of the I/jrttelton Borough Council the borough engineer reported that since last meeting very little progress had been made with the well-boring at Diamond Harbour, on account of breakages to the gear. The rock was still very hard, and the total depth bored during the last fortnight was only three feet. Cr Miller said that it was unfortunate that the boring was not making any appreciable progress. He was quite' optimistic as to the future, and hoped that the council would continue to bore for about another 10 days. Cr Hempstalk said he thought that the council was only wasting money, and with no prospects t>f ever obtaining water. According to farmers from the Peninsula, with whom he had spoken on the maftter, the lay of the land was not in accordance with water-bearing localities. Several other councillors spoke, and it was finally decided, on the motion of Cr Toy, that boring operations should be continued for another fortnight only.
