LADIES' HOCKEY.
NEW ?EALAND TOURNAMENT. Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 5. The New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Tournament, the gross proceeds of which will go towards the Wounded Soldiers'- Fund, opened at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, .under fair weather conditions. The games decided were keenly contested, and marked by good play. Results:— Wellington heat Wanganui, 40 to nil.
Manawatu beat Canterbury, 4 to 3. Wairarapa beat Hawke's Bay, 2 to 1. In the match Wellington v. Wanganui the local players' combination and good passing enabled them time and again to sweep clean through all opposition. Wanganui had a good team individually, but it clacked solidity, and so could not stem the repeated Wellington rushes. « Manawatu v. Canterbury.—This match was fast and exciting, play changing rapidly from end to end of the field, and the issue was in doubt right to the sound of no-side. Manawatu seemed the stronger team of the two, but had all its work cut out to secure the victory. Its forwards were more dashing than Canterbury's, but the latter's back in very fine work. For Manawatu, Misses Collingwood and Green scored two goals each, and, for Canterbury, Miss P. Pearce found the net three times. Wairarapa v. Hawke 's Bay.—The first half was fairly even, but in the second spell Wairarapa had the best of the game, though some opportunities were missed through bad shooting. The Hawke's Bay players worked hard, but luck was against them when the critical time arrived.
