One first offender was fined 5/- with 'the usual alternative, and another first j offender was discharged. i For being found drunk in High Street "William Crowley, a second offender, was i fined ;">/- or 24 hours' imprisonment. | CYCLING ON FOOTPATH. J For cycling on the footpath in .Hazel..dean Road, (ins. Nicholls was fined 7/i and costs. ! DAMAGING PROPERTY. j Theodore Augustine Godfrey was . charged with breaking a pane, of glass I valued at 10/-, two gas mantles valued I at .1/-, two gas chimneys valued at 2/-, | making u total of ]'•/-, the property of ! Ellen Godfrey. Air Cassidy appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Mr Cassidy explained, that it was a case of husband and wife, and that the husband had ; visited.the house in which his wife rej sided, and had nourished a stick and I broken the articles in question. The I accused would leave by the midday ex- ] press, and would never go near the j place again. Accused was convicted and ordered I I'o pay damages. j VAGRANCY. Emily Russell was charged with being an incorrigible rogue and with being found by night in the enclosed premises of Thomas MeCallum. .' Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, with the condition that if she remained in the* Salvation Army Home for six months she would not be called upon. ILLEGALLY IMPOUNDING.

i Robert Gibbs was charged with illegally impounding a mare, the property of Arthur Vincent. Mr Upham appeared for the complainant. Vincent said he was; riding a young horse and leading another, when a passing motor car frightened the animal, and it jumped over a ditch into Gibbs's pi-o-perty. When Vincent went to take the mare out of the paddotfk, by way of the M'ate, Gibbs would not allow him to do so, and so Vincent left the animal in the paddock. The next day Gibbs took the animal to the pound. Robert Gibbs admitted that he refused to allow Vincent to take the horse out of his property by way of the gate, because he thought the animal could be taken out the way it had come in. Gibbs was fined 20/- and costs. LAYING ODDS. Archibald Malloch was charged with laying totalisator odds on a, race at the South Canterbury Trotting Club 'a Winter Meeting. Mr Bishop appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. John Williams said that he met Malloch in a billiards room, and induced him to make,a bet. Malloch; agreed to try and get the money on, and stated that he was workingfor a company. He agreed to pay a limit of £6 10/- if the horse won. The horse won, and he was entitled to £1 17/. He then arranged to meet Malloch, who said he would not pay the amount, and, also stated that he had not made the bet. Witness then i received an lOU for the amount, but,! although the money had been promised, i it was not forthcoming. i Malloch's evidence was to the effect that he had received 10/- from Williams, as agent, to get the money on with a bookmaker. He had then forgotten all about the bet, and when he offered to refund Williams the .10/- it was refused. Malloch was convicted, and lined £5 and costs. LYTTELTON CASES. (Before Mr 11. W. Bishop, S.M.) PROHIBITION ORDERS.

David Johnston, for a .breach of his prohibition order on July 12, was convicted and fined 10/- and costs, with 48 hours' imprisonment in default; of payment. Ho was further charged with having entered 'the British Hotel during the currency of his prohibition order. He was convicted and fined 10/- and costs, in default 48 hours' imprisonment.

Elizabeth Buckmaster i was charged with a breach of her prohibition order on July 21, and was conA T icted and fined jlO/- and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment. She was also charged-with,having entered the Canterbury Hotel on .July 21 during the currency of a prohibition order. She was fined 10/- and.costs; or 4S hours' imprisonment, his Worship remarking that the next time she appeared she would be sent to Pakatoa. ! AN UNREGISTERED BARMAID. Edmond Hill (Mr Hunt) was charged that, being the licensee of the Empire Hotel, he employed an unregistered barmaid from June 21 to July 12, and from May 7to Mav 27. .. ," . Mr Hunt stated that the girl had been employed in a licensed house in Christchurch for three and a half years, and-Hill met her. ' She told him that. she' was out of employment, and he offered her the position in his house, having taken it for .granted that she was registered... She stayed ,f,or some time, and then went to Auckland for a holiday. When she came back from j Auckland she commenced her duties! I again. He then heard that she was un-j 1 registered, ;<"d immediatelv dismissed 1 flier. ■I Mr Bishop remarked on the serious-, ! ness of the offence. Defendant was I fined 5/- per day for the whole period, 'amounting to about £l.l, with costs. j THEFT. , I Richard George Ryan, an absconder j from the Burnham Industrial School, pleaded guilty to the theft on May 29 last, of goods valued at £7 15/-, the property of John Rock, Marshland; also, on June .'!, goods valued at £6, the property of Augustave Muller, Marshland; also,* on July 20, goods valued at £l9, j the property of James'Bundy, Lyttel-1 ton; also, on July 21, .goods valued at i ■7/0, the property of Albert Schimauski, i Marshland, tie was i-ouvicted on each! charge, and ordered to be sent back to! 'Buniliam. j JUVENILIS COURT. A boy who stole a football cover valued at 10/(1, the property of John H. Colliss, was convicted and ordered' to come up for sentence when called , upon, and was ordered lo be sent away' to relatives in Southland. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for the plaintiffs was given; in the following cases: —W. W. Webb and Sons v. Daniel Smith, 17/0 and o/costs; W. W. Webb and Sons and S. McGuire, £1 I/- and costs '</-. JUDGMENT .SUMMONS. Reuben AYhitford was ordered to pav W. W. Webb and Sons £3 10/0 at the rate of 2/- weekly, in default three days' imprisonment.
