THE MARCONI COMPANY.
NEGOTIATIONS WITH GOVERNMENT. Hp Cirblr. —Press A sgnciation.—n'j/Aif. (Received July 27, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, July 2<>. Mr Marconi, speaking at a meeting of the Marconi Company, stated that owing to the war the Postmas-ter-General cancelled the scheme for the Imperial wireless chain, but negotiations were recommenced with the Government in February to erect certain stations upon conditions differing from those of tlie original scheme. The negotiations are proceeding on a reasonable equivalent' basis. Mr Isaacs stated that owing to the German Government's support of the German scheme the company appealed to Sir Edward Grey, who from then supported their negotiations abroad. (Received July 27, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 20. Mr Isaacs added that, although the ultimatum did not expire till midnight, Germany, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon of August 4, sent wireless messages world-wide, saying: "War is declared; make for a neutral port as quickly as possible." Thus, she saved a great part of her mercantile marine. Germany had spent £2,000,000 upon these wireless stations, but recouped that amount by saving a single one of her largest steamers.
