Soou after the war broke out, the Christehureh City Council decided that it would make up the difference between the military pay —reckoned at six days per week—of any of its employees who left the Dominion as members of the Expeditionary Force, or who were called out on active service, and the pay they received from the council, if the latter pay were the larger. Many other public bodies in Canterbury liave adopted a similar attitude. At last evening's meeting .of the council, the By-laws and Finance Committee reported that an officer, who was in receipt of a salary of £.'JOO per annum, had asked whether the council's decision would be applicable to his case if he should enlist. The committee added: —"As this would involve considerable expenditure, and the committee is of opinion that when the resolution was adopted that the council anticipated that only juniors would be offering their services, the committee refers the matter to the council for decision." The council, after -hearing information concerning the case in question, agreed that the case came under the resolution, Avhich it confirmed. ;
