A German submarine has shelled a large British steamer, killing the captain and 10 of the crew, and injuring eight others. The steamer managed to reach port. ; >The Germans have made violent attacks in the West. They gained a little ground, but were unable to advance any - further. A New South Wales Minister, in a recruiting appeal, : says the Allies' position is "very serious." -The Germans are said to be preparing for a mighty effort on the Western front in the autumn. She was shelled by a .submarine, and her captain made a daring , and skilful attempt to evade the enemy. Several shells struck the vessel and killed the captain and 10 of the crew. Eight others were wounded. The "S.O/.5." signal brought help, and the submarine disappeared. The French schooner Hirondelle (183 tons) has been torpedoed off Ushant, and the crew has landed. The Anglo-Califoniian is a steamer of 7333 tons, built at Sunderland in. 1912 for lier owners, the Nitrate Producers S.S. Co., Ltd. London is her port of registry. The Anglo-Calif ornian, which was commanded by' Captahi F. Parslow, is provided with electrical fittings throughout, and submarine signalling apparatus. VIOLENT GERMAN ATTACKS. A communique states: — After a violent bombardment the Germans made two night attacks, one against Souchez and the other against the "Labyrinth." ' Both were repulsed, the enemy leaving many dead on the field. The Germans on Sunday afternoon took the offensive on a front of five kilometres, from Feyenhaye to Moselle; also to the east of Feyenhaye, as well as in the western of the Bois le . Pretre. They succeeded, after a violent bombardment, in regaining a footing in their old lines previously taken by us, but, despite an energetic attack, they were unable to advance further. During the 1870 war, he says, the French avoided hand-to-hand fighting with the German infantry, but now they impetuously seek it. He asserts that the Anglo-French spring offensive has failed.
