Mr P. L. Hallenstein left last evening for Wellington. Mr Justice Stringer was a passenger for Wellington by the ferry steamer last evening.
Messrs D. S. Evans (Sydney) and F. O. Waymouth (Palmerston North) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel.

An Auckland Press Association mes«. sage states that the Rev. E. A. 1 Kirwood, president of the Baptist tJaioa of New Zealand, has accepted a call to South Yarra, Melbourne. Mr B. O'Neill, a member of THE Sun literary staff, was yesterday presented by his colleagues with a case of pipes as a mark of interest in his wedding. Messrs H. G. Knight and W. Spieer will leave for Wellington this evening: to attend -a' conference of butchers to consider the Abattoirs Act. The con* ference will sit jit Palmerston North. ;
Messrs J. W. Brown (Nelson), L. - Harris (Napier), H. Livingstone Tapley, E. W. Wood, and A. R. Wallia (Dunedin) are visiting Christchurch, and are staying at the United Service Hotel. - v
Miss Nona Hildyard, of Lyttelton, left by last night's ferry steamer to jo-m .the nursing staff of the Maheno. Later she yvill go to one of the base hospitals. She was given a very: hearty farewell by a large number of friends.
Visitors to Christchurch staying at Warner's Hotel include Messrs X Arnold (London) and J. P. Mucom, C. W.' Shepley, J. A. Taylor, C. G. Laurie, W. S. Brown, and C. E. Matthews (Wellington) . They arrived in town this morning. Private Jack Mansell, well known in the Canterbury College football team, who left with the Ist Canterbury Regiment, cabled on June 23 from the Dardanelles to his parents in Christchurch, stating- that he was "unharmed and very fit."
The staff of the Christchurch Tele.graph Office assembled yesterday to say good-bye to Mr F. .J, Matthews, who has been transferred to Wellington. The superintendent, Mr A. J. Talbot, on behalf of those present, handed Mr Matthews a suit case and wished him every success in his new sphere.
Miss E. F. Da vies, who has been matron of the Palmerston Hospital for the past seven years, was appointed matron,, in place of Miss E. Morley, at the Ashburton Hospital, at yesterday's meeting of the*"Ashburtoa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Miss Morley resigned her position Some time ago in order to'offer her services for-army nursing % at the front.
