HELP SUGGESTED.
SEASIDE BOROUGHS.
SHOULD THE CITY PAY?
A short discussion took place at the New Brighton Borough Council meeting last evening in regard to the City Council subsidising seaside boroughs. . ,- Cr Christian was in favour of a deputation waiting on the City Council and asking for a" grant. The borough was an asset to Christchurch, and the bigger body should help to maintain what was \a lung of the city. He moved in this direction, and Cr F. Holland seconded. Cr Winny described the proposal as something in the nature of A hardy annual. There was small hope of any assistance from the City Council.
Cr Aslitey strongly deprecated the proposal, which, he thought, show a lamentable lack of dignity upon the part of New Brighton. If the borough finances were in a bankrupt condition, it would be time enough to seek the assistance of outsiders. The city traffic was carried over the roads by the tramways, and it cost the borough very little. If they could not conduct the affairs of the borough, let them advocate a Greater Christehurch Scheme. Cr Kibble white recognised the fairness of the proposal but urged the inbpportiineness of asking for assistance now. '' > ;-
The Mayor said the proposal might be given effect to by asking the Tramways Board: to levy toll Upon tram passengers. ; - ; ; ;:M >- .* ><•, : :t ; : -:.
