" J.o take oiio down a peg' is an allusion to lowering a ship's iln.fr, which is rogulatort }>y the peg's to which the Jiuo is fastened on deck. The higher a ship's colours are raised in saluting, the greater the- honour. Hence, to take them down a peg is to lower the dignity.
