The following cable message has been received by the Prime Minister from the High Commissioner:— "Please convey to Mrs Loach, Merivalc, Christchureh, the following message:—'Lieut-Col. Loach leaving for New Zealand about end of month; will not operate; would take 12 months to use leg again."

LANCE-CORPORAL R. THWAITES

Lance-Corporal R. Thwaites (Canterbury Battalion) died of wounds, was formerly a linesman in the employ of the Telegraph Department, tit Nelson.

TROOPER C. D. McLENNAN

Trooper C. D. McLennan (Canterbury Mounted), killed in action, was a member of .the Dunedin City Fire Brigade. He enlisted in Dunedin, and went to the front with the Third Reinforcements. His father was Mr Duncan McLennan, of Kiversdale.

PRIVATE F. O'CONNOR.

Mr P. O'Connor, of Allcrton, Ashburton, has received word that his son, Pvte. Frank O'Connor, who enlisted at Wellington, and was reported wounded, is being sent home by the Willochra.

CHAPLAIN-CAPT. F. T. TAYLOR.

The Bishop of Nelson has received a letter from the Rev. T. Fielder Taylor, chaplain with the Canterbury Battalion, dated Malta, May-25. MiTaylor states that while rescuing a wounded man from the trenches he was shot in the back, the bullet striking three sovereigns in his belt, and glancing from them into his back. The bullet his now been extracted, and the wound is slowly healing. MrTaylor says •• there is nor.ne'ed for anxiety, and he hoped to be with the troops within a month. PRIVATE E. A. CAHILL. Private E. A. Cahill (AucWaM Battalion), killed, was 27 yeans of age, and before the outbreak of war held a clerical position in an insurance office in Queensland. He joined the Ist Australian Expeditionary Force. Pvte. Cahill took an active; part in cricket and swimming. Aybrother, Mr J. A. Cahill, is manager of the New Zealand Acetylene Gas Co., in Auckland. PRIVATE E. N. BOOTH. Private Edgar Normanby Booth (Auckland Battalion),killed, was a son of Mr R. Booth, of the Dunedin Telegraph Ofliee, and was 24 years of age. He was born at Blenheim and educated there and at Christchurch. For many years he was connected with the Ellerbeck Photographic Studios, Auckland, and then entered into business on his own account at Dominion Road, Auckland. When the war broke out he joined the Auckland Infantry Battalion, and assisted the band as cornet player. He had served for some years in the volunteers as a member of the Engineer Corps, and was also attached to the Boy Scouts, holding the office of scoutmaster. He was an allround athlete, and had charge of the Mount Eden and Epsom Methodist Gymnasium Clubs, while for a number of years he represented those clubs on the Association football field. In musical .circles he was a member of the Auckland Harmonic Orchestra and Pit I Street Methodist Church choir.
