CAPTAIN SCOTT MEMORIAL.
Yesterday afternoon a meeting of the Executive Qommittee of the Scott Memorial Fund- was held, there beingpresent the Mayor (Mr H. Holland, in the chair), Dr (3. Chilton, Dr O. C. Farr, Mr G. Witty, M.P., Mr H. R. Smith, and Mr C. 11. Gilby, lion, secretary. A sub-committee consisting of the Mayor (Mr H. Holland), Drs Chilton and Farr, Colonel Snow, and Mr C. H. Gilby, reported that it had considered correspondence with Lady Scott, and also sketch designs of a statue of the late Captain Scott, which is in course of preparation in the studio of Lady Scott, and is to be erected in London next month, the height of the figure, in Antarctic dress, being 10ft. Ladj r Scott had intimated her willingness to supply a replica of this figure; the cost of casting in bronze was estimated f to be in the neighbourhood of £2OO. The sum immediately available for the whole memorial might be set down at £llOO. The committee had been supplied with designs and quotations by a local firm, and had also sought the assistance and advice of one or two leading artists, and, after consideration of all the circumstances, unanimously recommended that Lady Scott's offer of a replica in bronze of the figure of Captain Scott be accepted, and, further, that she be asked to prepare designs for a suitable pedestal with bas reliefs in bronze of Captain Scott's four companions, and, if possible, in addition, two typical scenes, and a space for Captain Scott's final message, the memorial to be erected on the site already approved by the coiiiniittee, on the reserve opposite the City Council Chambers. The Mayor stated that Lady Scott could not design the figure satisfactorily without also designing the base. Mr Herdman Smith had recommended that the work of designing both should be "entrusted to her, as if she did the statue and someone else the pedestal, it would be very difficult to get the two parts to harmonise. It was resolved, on the motion of Br Chilton, that the report be adopted for presentation to the general meeting of subscribers to the fund, and it was decided that a general meeting of the subscribers should lie called for to-day.
