UNITED BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of tho United Burgesses' Association was held at the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Saturday evening'. There was a fair attendance of delegates from the affiliated rassociiitions. Mr (>. E. Franklin occupied the chair.

Mr 3. Butterfiold moved a hearty vote of sympathy to tho relatives of the late Dr Russell. The vote was passed, the members standing. The president of St. Martins Burgesses ' Association (Mr J. 11. Hunter) wrote asking the co-operation of the united body on the question of proportioual representation in regard to the coming Tramway Board election. In supporting the letter he said that lie had since heard that the present Act would uot permit of the change. Mr J. Lougton (St. Martins Association) said under the present system of voting a large proportion of the people were not represented at all. Mr .1. 11. Nowlyn moved:—"That the various associations and the public interested be invited to attend a meeting early in May, and that Mr J. McOombs, M.P., bo asked to deliver an address on the proportional representation method of voting, to be followed by a trial vote carried out under the ordinary system, preferential and proportional representation." This was seconded by Mr Uren and carried.

Mr ,1. Butter/ield moved that the Drainage Board be written to in reference to the pollution of the Heathcote River. This was carried.

A discussion took place in reference to the action of the council in remitting the rates on (lie park. The chairman said that it would l»e just as fair to remit the rates on the buildings and factories of public companies as to exempt a company Jiko the Lancaster Park Company. All the delegates present said they were strongly opposed to the council's action because Sydenham had to make up the difference. The Electric Lighting Committee came in for strong criticism in regard to the price of electric current.
