STARVING BELGIANS.
APPALLING DESTITUTION REPORTED.
CHAIRMAN OF COMMISSION GIVES STARTLING FIGURES.
(Received April 27, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, April 26. The National Committee of Relief ..in Belgium is appealing for £500,000 a -month to feeep ! body and soul; together among the utterly destitute. ' . ; , >lr H. C. Hoover, chairman of at Brussels, writes: —: < ''.'.., ..' Unless we get more assistance hundreds of thousands of the 7,000,000 people in Belgium will starve. At least 1,500,000 Belgians are now entirely destitute, with the ■, rapid exhaustion of meat and vegetable supplies, probably before the harvest time, there will be 2,500,000 who must be fed and clothed entirely by charity.
He adds: The remaining 4,500,00 ft will get a pitiful daily allowance of bread through the Commission, and will pay for it.
