Mr H. B. Sorensen is one of Christchurch's veteran public men. Ho has resided in this city for about half a century, and for half that period he has engaged actively in public affairs. Mr Sorensen has been deputy-Mayor for the last two years.

Mr 1J..-M. Spoil's, the Social-Demo-cratic candidate for the Mayoralty, came to Christchuvch as a Salvation Army officer, in which capacity he saw mucii .service. Later he entered into business as a land and estate agent. He has been prominently connected with the No-Liccu.se League, and the SocialDemocrat ic Party, and last year he unsuccessfully contested the Mayoralty.

NEW BRIGHTON.

Mr .1. A. Flesher, who is a candidate for the Ma.yora.lty of New Brighton, has interested himself for many years in public, affairs. He was formerly Mayor of New Brighton, succeeding Mr C. 11. A. T. Opie in that office. "For «*i long time past he .has been a member of the Tramways Board, and is at present its chairman. Mr Flesher is well known in Methodist circles, being a prominent officer of the Church.

Captain A. W. Owles has been a resident of New Brighton for 27 years, and has been closely associated with the municipal life of the borough ever since it was constituted; having been one of the first councillors. During the past two years he has been DeputyMayor and chairman of the Works Committee. Six years ago he stood for the Mayoralty, and was defeated by the late Mr C.lanville by seven votes. He now redeems a promise made at that time that lie, would again be a candidate. Captain Owles is connected with numerous bodies in New Brighton.

Extraordinary interest is beiug taken in the New Brighton contest, and both candidates have very solid bodies of supporters. Their views are almost entirely opposite on most points of public policy, and the contest between them is one of the most interesting of the present elections. It is safe to predict that there will be a very heavy poll, and the result of the election will be eagerly awaited, not only in the seaside suburb itself, but also in the citv.

SPREYDON.

Mr T. Woods, who is in business as a bootmaker, was born in Christchnrch, and has lived in Spreydon practically all his life. He has represented the West Ward, in the Spreydon Borough Council for two years, for part of which time he was chairman of the Finance Committee. He resigned from the chairmanship of that committee as a protest against what he considered the extravagance of the council. He has taken, a lively interest in the local politics of Spreydon.

Mr W. HJ Win nor, who is contesting the Mayoralty of Spreydon, has been connected with the council of that ■ borough since April, 1912, when he was elected to succeed Mr E. If. Clark. For the last 12 months he has been chairman of the Works Committee. Mr Winsor is connected with several organisations outside the borough, and is a member of the executive committees of most of them.

The contest for the Spreydon Mayoralty tluis year is exceedingly keen. The borough finances, and the expenditure of borough funds, are two subjects which have been closely debated, and more will probably be heard of them, as Mr Woods has accepted a challenge thrown out by the retiring Mayor, Mr G.
