ON BAND CONTEST.

INTERESTING TO BANDSMEN, [THE SUN has arranged to publish the judge's notes in connection with the Christchurch Band Contest. The notes, by arrangement, will be published from day to day in THE SUN, and will cover the whole contest.] EUPHONIUM SOLO. "No. 3,-r—' 'FANTASIA CONCERTANTE. A. McCLINTOCK ; 2nd. An uncertain start is made, hut an j improvement later. Tone is good from I a tempo nice playing. Recit. suffers through slight, lapse, and made E flat in turn instead of natural. Audaute: Playing with nice tone aud cantabile style. Cadenza splendidly given. Concluding bar also well played. Theme: This is receiving "nice treattreatment; attention is paid to colour. Var. 1: Good rhymtliical playing here, and technique is also very good. Polacca: Another good section. Cadenza well played. Allegro: Vivo: Good, clean playing to end. Points, 90. No. 4.—'''GIPSY'S WARNING,'» Good style at opening, aud playing carefully. Tone is not very full. Cadenza neatly played, though lacking in brilliancy. Theme: This is being treated with refinement and with taste. Var. 1: Wrong notes occur in first strain. Cadenza nicely rendered. Playing later, although neat, is rather weak. Var. 2: Clean playing here. Slight; uncertainty in cadenza, but finish well given. Var. o: Chromatics clearly played. Cadenza also well done. Andante: Very nicely rendered. Polacca: Fairly good stylo displayed hore, and clean playing is noticeable from piu vivo. Good finish. Points, S3. No. s.—'' SINGVOGELCHEN.'' Hardly secure on liigh 0 in cadenza; otherwise well played. Second cadenza is fairly well done. AVeak in upper register. Aiidautino: Proceeds with careful playing. Cadenza liardly clear in florid work. Trill good. Theme: Playiug with refinement and tasto. Tone is of fairly good quality. Var. I: Neatly rendered. Technique good. Var. 2: Lip fails here, and you stop altogether. Points, 75. No. 6.—'«SINGVOGELCHEN.'' Opens with good tone, but cadenza is only fairly-.weli done, an improvement iu second cadenza. Andantina: Carefully played. Cad well rendered. Theme: Given with good tone, and treatment is fair; more could be made of this melody. Vari: Clearly played, and with good style. Var. 2: Excepting uncertainty near close, was well rendered. Adagio: Nicely played and playing from pp is discreet. Allegretto: Brilliantly rendered, and accents well marked. I notice the colour at piu lento. Cadenza broke bb, which marred an otherwise good rendition. Finish is good. Points, 88. No. 7.— 4 'LA SONNAMBULA." Larglietto: Opens with blur on first note, aud later at bar 6, but soon alright. Cadenza well played. Theme: Fairly good playiug here. Tone is of fair quality. Var. 1: Creditably performed, uncertain once. Var. 2: Really good playing here, with clean technique. Var. 3:-Hardly distinct in places, but ou the whole well rendered. Finale: Nice neat playing to begin with, but later technique is not quite so sjood, and finish is rather weak. Points, 8t», No. B.—"JENNY JONES."J. LOWE—lst. Opens with fine tone, but taken rather Past. I like-your style. Tone is rich ind full on lower register. Cadenza ifvas i splendid effort, and subsequent playing is very good. Cadenza excepting 1)1 ur on high 1) very fine; pedal notes a feature. Theme: You have a superior method, ind song is receiving good treatment. Var. 1: Another piece of fine playing. Just a blur on A near finish. Var. 2: Technique again good; a blur is noticed.

Andante: Nice refined playing here. A good se«3o of colour is aliown, and I certainly like your tone. Cadenza is really good. Polar,ca: Again good playing,-blurred high Gr before a tempo, and continues | with line playing to end. Points, 95. No. 9.—' 'NORDISCHE.'' Bather light tone for euphonium. Cadenzas are marred by uncertainty in places, playiug later receives refined treatment, and cadenza is well rendered. Recit. fairly well expressed. Allegro: Playing here lacks vigour, and rythm is not well defined. Andante: Fairly well given, and playing in cadenza is not secure, and following cadenza is only fairly well played. Andante: Playing with nice smooth style here, and considerable taste has been displayed. Andante: Really -nice playing, but your tone needs broadening, marlcy well observed, though tone from II might have been fuller, blurred high A. This has been tastefully rendered. Risoluto: Good technique here, and the whole was neatly played, though, perhaps, a little weak in tone. Finish is good. Points, 86. No. 10.—'' BACCHUS." Recit. given with very good tone and style is also good. In subsequent playing a litle more freodom would be an improvement, a slip is noticed. Cadonza very well played. Andante: Safely played and with good tone. Yar. 1: Very clearly played. Var. 2: Again good technique is exhibited. Andante: Fair playiug hero, more variety of tone required.
