PERSONALS.

Colonel A. W. Eobin arrived from Wellington on Saturday. Dr J. C. Bradshaw returned from the north on Saturday morning. Mr J. D. Eoberts, of Auckland, is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr P. J. O'Eegan, of Wellington, is spending a few days in Christchureh. The Eev. W. B. Scott arrived from Wellington by Saturday's ferry steamer. ■■•..' Mr Justice Denniston arrived in Christchureh from Wellington yesterday morning. Dr J. Graham Gow, of Wellington, has been appointed medical officer at Denniston. Mr J. B. Bell, of Hastings, is at present in Christchureh, staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr L. S. Spafford, of Sherbrooke, Canada, is on a visit to Christchureh. He is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr S. E. Wright, secretary of the Hawke's Bay Employers' Association, has been appointed to a similar position in Auckland. Messrs L. M. Gleason (New York), Innes Taylor, and H. P. Nelson (Cambridge) arrived in Christchureh yesterday, and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr John Blundell, one of the proprietors of the Wellington "Evening Post," who has been on a visit to the South Island, returned to Wellington on Saturday evening. J Mr G. V. Pearce, M.P. for Patea, and Mr E. P. Lee, M.P. for Oamaru, paid a visit to the Ashburton County last week, and were the guests of Mr W. Nosworthy, M.P., and Mrs Nosworthy. They visited the back country, and also the Longbeach Estate,-where they were entertained by Mr and Mrs John Grigg. Mr George Lamb, a very old resident of the Ashburton district, died at his residence, Wakanui Eoad, on Friday. He was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1843, and came to New Zealand in 1866. He was engaged in farming in the Ashburton district for over 40 years. He leaves a family of nine sons and three daughters. A large number of parishioners assembled at the Avonside schoolroom recently, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Clowes. Mr Clowes, after two years' work at St. Chad's Mission Eoom, is leaving the district. He was presented by the parishioners Avith a substantial purse of sovereigns as a mark of their esteem, and the choir of St. Chad's presented him with a handsome brief-bag. He was also the recipient of a goldmounted fountain pen from the Sunday School scholars, and teachers of St. Chad's. The Eev. O. Fitzgerald audi others testified to Mr Clowes 'a good work for the parish.

A private cablegram received m Wellington announces the death, on April 6, of Mr John Marshall, head of the well-known cutlery firm of Messrs Christopher Johnston and Co. Mr G. N. Sturtevant, of the Lands and Survey Department, has been appointed head of the photo-lithographic branch of the Government Printing ! Office, vice Mr D. Boss, who recently retired. Mr Bobert Hislop, who for the past three years has been general manager of the Auckland branch of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., has been transferred to London as manager for the United Kingdom. Chief-Detective F. J. Bishop, who. has been stationed at Christehurch for the past 10 years, has been transferred, to Dunedin, and will leave for that city in a few weeks. Chief-Detective Herbert, of Dunedin, has been transferred to Christehurch.
