THE HARVEST FESTIVAL.
ACTIVE PREPARATIONS.
FOR NEXT SATURDAY. The date of the great Belgium Harvest Festival, for which so many people have been working throughout Canterbury for several months, is now only a week off, and arrangements are now almost complete. . The festival will be the biggest thing of its kind ever held in the Dominion, and should be attended by very great crowds. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. Holland) requests citizens to observe Festival Day (Saturday, April 17) as a whole holiday.
Arrangements are well in hand for the establishment of several tea and other refreshment, tents. The assistants in the luncheon tent are giving their services free.
The Kailway Department is issuing excursion tickets to Christclvurch from Ashburton, Culverden, and intermediate stations, including stations on branches between these points. The Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association has planned a special effort on behalf of its candidate for election as Queen of the Festival (Miss .M. Nicol). An open-air concert will be held at the Victoria Square rotunda this evening, and amongst the performers will be Mr Percy Code, champion cornet player of Australasia.
The children of the infant department of the Addington School have decorated their room with the colours of Nurse Maude, the tramways candidate for the queen election, and have provided a ballot box. Already they have cast 65 votes for Nurse Maude.
Messrs Alex. Wildey, Ltd., will have a printing press on the show grounds, and will print visiting cards for patrons of the festival. The proceeds will be devoted to the fund.
The Pioneer Motor Club requests all motorists in and around Christclvurch to participate in the festival. All willing to take part are asked to hand in their names to the club secretary.
The Lyttelton Ladies' Swimming Club has decided to forego its annual "social" this year, and instead to devote the sum of £6 to the purchase of votes for the Foreshores candidate (Miss O. Thorpe). Mr P*. Burke's staff, to the number of 180, are giving their services free at the luncheon rooms on Saturday, 17th inst. This is much to their credit, as they will be sufforers by the war during the coming winter, owing to curtailment of ordinary entertainments.
