GROW MORE WHEAT.

The Board of Agriculture has issued I the following statement in regard to! wheat production, in the hope that i farmers will grow as much wheat as j their mode of farming and their .envir- j onment will allow: — "The Board of Agriculture would like to remind the farmers of New Zealand of the great necessity, in tlie inter- J ests of the Empire, that the wheat areas should be largely augmented. To en-j sure our crop of wheat in the coming ] season being sufficient to feed the people j of New Zealand, and leave enough for j seed for the following season, at least j 240,000 acres would require to be sown. j The area in wheat during the present I season has been 189,000 acres, so that j 50,000 acres, or about 27 per cent., more i would require to be sown in the coming i season than the present one to ensure! that there is sufficient for the Domin- j ion "s use. Less Mould probably mean j we should have to buy outside and from ; other countries probably less favoured ■ than ourselves. I

"As the restriction as to price has been taken off by the Government, there is every reason to think that the price will be a remunerative one. The board would also like to .suggest that those who intend to sow wheat in the coming season should procure seed grown in the Dominion, as imported wheat requires a considerable time to acclimatise, and generally gives unsatisfactory yields the first season. "The board would caution farmers, however, that tlie above area should not l>c deducted from the area usually devoted to oats, for if this were done the oats and chaff grown would not be sufficient for our wants."
